Folks would be surprised to see how often families come to me about a serious accident only for our investigations to find that law enforcement ignored or overlooked something crucial. Sometimes it's due to a lack of proper equipment, sometimes the officer left in charge is inexperienced, and sometimes the department just forces officers to move to other priorities before they've had a chance to do their jobs. In some extreme cases it becomes clear during our investigation that police just dismissed a bicycle accident as the rider's fault for getting in the way of "real vehicles."

I can't say what did or didn't happen here, obviously, but just about any commercial truck wreck warrants every effort to get the facts. As I said, with bicyclists there's also a concern that people will assume the rider was somewhere they shouldn't have been. I know the importance of giving people the benefit of the doubt unless evidence says otherwise, and it would be best that whoever handles this situation exercises the same prudence.
