Commentary on Bicycle/Truck Accident on Dividend in Rocky Hill
There isn't much information about what happened here, and that could just be due to the investigation's early stages. Authorities often withhold details until they verify them and/or learn more. However, it's also important to ensure they're giving the crash the careful attention it deserves.
Folks would be surprised to see how often families come to me about a serious accident only for our investigations to find that law enforcement ignored or overlooked something crucial. Sometimes it's due to a lack of proper equipment, sometimes the officer left in charge is inexperienced, and sometimes the department just forces officers to move to other priorities before they've had a chance to do their jobs. In some extreme cases it becomes clear during our investigation that police just dismissed a bicycle accident as the rider's fault for getting in the way of "real vehicles."
I can't say what did or didn't happen here, obviously, but just about any commercial truck wreck warrants every effort to get the facts. As I said, with bicyclists there's also a concern that people will assume the rider was somewhere they shouldn't have been. I know the importance of giving people the benefit of the doubt unless evidence says otherwise, and it would be best that whoever handles this situation exercises the same prudence.
