Commentary on Flavio Garcia-Lopez Accident near Ainsworth
Reports suggest the driver took the curve too fast when the truck rolled over. I have no specific reason to doubt that and he certainly wouldn't be the first, but at the same time I'm a a little concerned that the news--and possibly investigators--jumped to a few conclusions after a quick once-over at the scene. People tend to blame single-vehicle accidents on the drivers, but what if there's more to the story?
For instance, an unfortunate problem in the modern trucking industry is truck manufacturers failing to build to specifications that better resist overturns and protect drivers. Corners get cut and designs never change even if simple safety improvements could be made to help prevent significant injury in the unfortunate event of a crash. When those improvements aren't implemented, a crash may end up much worse than it realistically had to be. Could something like that have been a factor here?
