Teen Killed, 1 Injured in Tractor-trailer Accident on Route UU in Lawrence County, MO

Lawrence County, MO -- August 10, 2022, a teen was killed and one was injured after an accident where a tractor-trailer crashed on Route UU.

Investigators reported that the crash took place just north of Phelps. Reports describe the accident as a single-vehicle tractor-trailer accident. It appears a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old were in a semi-truck going southbound on Route UU. Somehow, the truck ran off-road where it overturned.

Commentary on Semi-Truck Accident on Route UU in Lawrence County

It's not clear who exactly was driving here, and the implication a 16-year-old was behind the wheel of a commercial truck certainly stand out. But I want to be clear that there is no reason to jump to conclusions, tempting as that may be for some. Whatever caused this wreck, there could be other factors more important to the families affected by this tragedy.

Something that specifically stands out to me, for example, is the truck overturning. That makes it absolutely crucial to find out how safe this truck was. Many commercial trucks collapse under their own weight in a rollover when a safer truck likely wouldn't. In other words, it's possible the only reason this crash was fatal was due to a manufacturing oversight rather than the crash itself.

That's just one possible factor, of course, but it's one of the reasons I always encourage more thorough independent investigations. A child losing their life is far from the exception to that.
