Commentary on Crash at Chestnut and Lane in Fresno
When a wreck happens at a light-controlled intersection like the one where this reportedly occurred, folks may think determining who's to blame is as simple as finding out who had the green light and the right-of-way. Sometimes that's true, but other times things are more complicated.
To make sure the full story is learned it's important to dig deeper than just learning who went on green. How fast were both vehicles traveling? The news says the sedan was speeding but an actual number would be far more useful. Did one of the vehicles malfunction or have a defect? Were both drivers awake, alert, and paying attention to their surroundings? Is this intersection dangerous or somehow designed poorly? Do the lights work correctly? Did someone run a steady red, or did they try to beat a changing yellow one?
It may be some time before police get answers to some of those questions (if they even look for them), but sometimes their efforts aren't enough. So-called "finished" police reports rarely tell the whole story, and getting the facts they miss may require independent professionals with enough time, the right tools, and abundant experience. Whatever led to this accident, making sure the victim's loved ones know the full story is crucial. Will that effort be made here?
