Commentary on I-70 Van Crash in Clay Township

After a single-vehicle crash like this I'm often concerned that people will be much too quick to blame the driver. Even law enforcement sometimes falls prey to that temptation; officers go with their gut feelings about speeding or distraction, then don't bother to follow up and find proof.

I'm not saying it's impossible that the driver just made some kind of mistake, as operator error is the most common cause of single-vehicle wrecks. However, nothing should be taken for granted or assumed, particularly when a life was lost. Every possibility should be considered and investigated, even less-likely ones. After all, how many people blamed the victims of the infamous GM ignition switch defect before learning that a faulty part in millions of GM and Chevrolet vehicles was responsible for the damage done?

Investigating a solo accident is more complex than most people realize. Getting real answers takes time, the right experience, and advanced equipment that law enforcement doesn't always have. To learn more, click the image below.
