Driver Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash on Mockingbird Ln in Victoria, TX

Victoria, TX — June 26, 2022, a 28-year-old man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on Mockingbird Lane in Victoria.

According to reports the incident happened around 3:15 p.m. on East Mockingbird near Professional Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was driving a Chevrolet Impala west in the outside lane of the roadway when the driver lost control at the Professional Park intersection. The car left the road and ran up the curb, then continued forward another 200 feet and hit a utility pole.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash. Investigators believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Car Accident on Mockingbird Ln in Victoria

Investigators thought alcohol was involved in this crash. Whether they found specific evidence or not is unclear, but if it's really considered a possibility then they should take steps to confirm it. That usually means either drawing blood for testing or getting the injured suspect's hospital paperwork. Preliminary reports don't mention either action, but neither would surprise me.

If evidence ultimately confirms their suspicions then some might think the only thing left is to charge the suspect accordingly, but there could be more to look into. For example, if a local alcohol provider over-served the driver and got him too drunk to operate his vehicle correctly, that business may be responsible for his injuries under Texas dram shop law.

However, it's important not to fixate on just alcohol just because it's suspected. Unless there's clear evidence of intoxication the investigation should account for other possible variables too. Did the driver have a medical emergency that incapacitated him? Could his car have blown a tire or had a mechanical failure? Was the road wet or hazardous?

Those are just a few of many concerns to address to make sure the real story is learned. If police already have tunnel vision about impairment and don't plan to consider other possible factors (including a dram shop violation), maybe independent investigators should have another look.
