Commentary on Saskia Peikert Car Accident in Weimar
Something I see from people a lot is the assumption a crash like this is as simple as it gets. Police can find out what caused the pickup to cross the center line and file any necessary charges or citations. What more is there to discuss? Well, there can be a lot to discuss, but I rarely ever see authorities take those steps. This can cause important details victims and families need to hear to slip through the cracks.
For example, a colleague and I were discussing a crash not long ago where texting and driving led to a minor collision. The driver in the car, however, had very serious injuries. Authorities simply shrugged it off, but more thorough independent investigations revealed she had a defective airbag. With a proper airbag, she likely would have been fine.
I'm not saying something like that happened here. It's simply that the investigators handling these crashes need to have the experience and tools to consider these possibilities, however likely they may or may not be. That way, folks can get the help they deserve.
