Commentary on Semi-Truck Accident on I-15 in Fallbrook

People tend to see a rear-end collision and just assume the rear driver is automatically at fault. This is an all too pervasive misconception, so I try to push back on it whenever possible. Generally speaking, it is true that this sort of thing is usually the result of someone not paying attention to traffic ahead or following too closely. Maybe that happened here. But what about other factors beyond their control?

Driver Injured in Semi-Truck Accident on I-15 in Fallbrook, CA

A while back, a co-worker of mine hit the back of a truck. It was raining at the time, traffic was rather heavy, and a dump truck pulled out of a construction zone into the left lane going about 10 MPH. They had no choice but to lay on the brakes and hope for the best, but the wet roads carried them into the back of a truck. Should they have been at fault for that rather than a commercial truck cutting off heavy traffic at dangerously low speeds? I think most reasonable folks would have had just about as hard a time as my colleague avoiding that crash.

Maybe nothing like that happened here, but the important thing is to not jump to conclusion. Having independent investigators look into things could show there was an unavoidable series of events leading to this crash. If nothing else, letting the evidence speak for itself is often the best way to ensure people get the help they deserve.
