Commentary on Lee Simmons Truck Tire Accident in Harris County

Initially I could only speculate about what exactly happened here, but more recent details certainly paint a concerning picture. A whole axle breaking isn't exactly common, but it happens. It's important folks realize these incidents aren't always as sudden as they may seem.

Lee Simmons Killed, Child Injured in Truck Tire Accident in Harris County, TX

Having handled hundreds of commercial vehicle wrecks over the years, folks would be shocked to see the condition some companies keep their trucks in. I've seen some axles which were more rust than anything. Allowing trucks to degrade to that point makes accidents like this one inevitable. Not only do those companies need to be held accountable for accidents their negligence causes, they need to face consequences stiff enough to ensure they clean up their act.

Now, I can't say if a lack of maintenance is what led to this crash. It's entirely possible, though even less likely, that some kind of defect led to a catastrophic failure. I'm certainly not suggesting the trucking company or driver involved here is automatically at fault for anything. That requires evidence, and the best way to get that evidence is to ensure investigators have the right experience and equipment. Maybe authorities can handle that on their own, but I wouldn't put all of my eggs in one basket when it comes to getting a grieving family the answers they desperately need. Perhaps more thorough independent investigations would be the more prudent path forward here.
