Commentary on Semi-Truck Accident on I-10 in Phoenix

I'm sure after reading the reported details of this crash some are tempted to blame the truck driver for losing control and think little more about it. That's not to speak ill of the person who tragically lost their life in the crash, just to recognize how quickly people will jump to conclusions when presented with vague information.

It's true that driver mistakes like speeding or inattention is often found to be behind wrecks like this, and I'm sure investigators will try to find signs of those as well as some other common causes. However, it would never be right to jump to any such conclusions and the victim deserves the benefit of the doubt while other possible explanations are considered.

For instance: Does the truck's electronic data suggest the victim tried to stop or steer away before hitting the pillar? How fast was the truck traveling when it jackknifed? Was there something wrong with it, like a brake or engine failure? Was the driver somehow incapacitated and unable to stop? How long were they driving before the crash occurred? When was their last break, and what did they do at the time? Were they appropriately trained and experienced? What were road, light, and weather conditions like at the time? Could anything else have been a factor?

As I said before, I'm sure many are tempted to forego all that extra work and just blame whatever seems most likely to them. However, it's important after any crash to carefully investigate all its possible explanations and ensure the truth is discovered. Unusual elements contribute to wrecks all the time and too often go unnoticed, so it's best never to prematurely point fingers. The true cause should be found to ensure the victim's family get the answers and help they deserve.
