Commentary on Herman Toney Truck Accident in Jefferson County

Folks are often quick to take reports like this at face value, and I try to discourage that as much as possible. Police say what they think happened here, and I have no particular reason to doubt them. But I always talk about the importance of independent investigations because, quite frankly, authorities make mistakes.

Not that long ago, for example, I handled a situation with similar details. Authorities said a woman was driving on the highway, drifted out of her lane, and crashed beneath the trailer of an oncoming 18-wheeler. As clear as that seemed, we made sure to have experienced accident reconstructionists map out the scene and dig into the details. Their findings proved the police were wrong.

What actually happened was the 18-wheeler took a curve too fast, causing the trailer to whip out into the woman's lane. Put simply, had there not been more thorough investigations, the victim's loved ones may never have learned the truth.

Maybe nothing like that would happen here, but is it really worth risking important information slipping through the cracks? I know if I lost a loved one, I'd want to know the full story, no matter who or what caused the crash.
