When a lot of people read about crashes like this, they tend to assume the pedestrian is automatically at fault. Reports say they were in the road, so that's that. In reality, things aren't always so simple. For all we know, the pedestrian was well-lit and avoidable, and the driver wasn't paying attention. Or, there could be an unusual situation like one I handled a while back where it turned out the victim had been illegally over-served by an alcohol provider, meaning they were responsible under dram shop law for getting him so drunk he put his own life in danger. Common or not, it's important to consider these alternative explanations. Even an investigations simply rules them out, someone losing their life is worth the effort to ensure their loved ones at least know they're getting the full story.
