Commentary on Ashton Bernier, Glenwood McEwen Truck Accident in Fort Kent

It isn't really clear what happened here, but folks may not be too worried. Authorities will just figure out who crossed the center line, and that's that, right? Well, things aren't always so simple. Not only does a flaming crash site create a lot of chaos, but police departments don't always have the tools and experience available to get clear answers.

That's how you get a situation like one I handled a while back involving a crossover collision which turned fatal. Police believed a car veered over the center line and hit a semi-truck head-on. However, once we had independent accident reconstructionists look into things, the evidence told a completely different story.

It was actually the semi-truck that drifted into oncoming lanes. The victim swerved left to avoid it, but the truck then veered back into its original lane. The investigating officer was simply inexperienced, ill-equipped, and unable to do much beyond jump to conclusions based on his impression of the scene.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that here to blame anyone. I just want to highlight that these crashes are rarely as straight-forward as people may think. Whether one of the drivers here messed up or this was some unusual situation neither of them could reasonably avoid, it will likely take thorough independent investigations to make sure nothing important goes overlooked.
