Commentary on Richard Becker Truck Accident in Pullman

When folks read about a tire blowout, they tend to assume one of two things happened. Either something in the road punctured the tire, or the driver didn't replace worn tires. Those are certainly common factors, but there are two other scenarios I always encourage people to keep in mind, however likely they may be.

For one, this was a commercial truck. Drivers generally have a responsibility to ensure their vehicle is in working order, but if they work for a company that would rather save money on maintenance than protect their workers, that's a dangerous company that needs to be held accountable.

Secondly, while relatively rare, there should always be some consideration for the possibility of a defect. Tire defects have unexpectedly caused deadly crashes over the years, but it's an unusual and complex situation that typically requires thorough independent investigations from people experienced with such issues. Are those steps being taken here?

One way or another, a man reportedly has serious injuries due to this. Whatever is or isn't common shouldn't matter. What should matter is getting clear answers and taking any possible steps to get him and his loved ones the help they need. It remains to be seen if those steps are being taken here.
