Commentary on Fatal Car Accident on North Freeway in Harris County

This early in the morning, folks will no doubt jump to conclusions that the driver was likely intoxicated. Harris County having so many alcohol-related crashes no doubt feeds that belief even more. But things aren't always so simple, and it's important that those affected by the tragic accident know they're getting the full story. That's especially true if someone out there is responsible for contributing to these awful events.

Something to consider, for example, is dram shop law. It says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Someone on their way home from a bar may have been illegally over-served, so taking steps to seek out and hold accountable a complicit establishment can help the victims and families while also making the community safer for everyone.

Of course, that's only if alcohol was even a factor here. For all we know, the victims' car was cut off or had some kind of mechanical issues. Maybe this was something as simple as cell phone or fatigue related. Maybe other events neither driver could control led to the crash. One way or another, having investigators get clear answers about what happened means ensuring there are thorough investigations as soon as possible.
