Commentary on Austin Motorcycle Accident off I-35

It's not clear how or why this crash happened yet, and I hope those blanks will be filled quickly by careful investigation. Part of my concern about that comes from one of the participants being on a motorcycle; I've handled many such accidents over the years and I've learned that riders often get the short end of the stick from both the public and investigators.

Whether people realize it or not many of them have some unfortunate biases toward motorcyclists--biases that make them feel like most riders are reckless daredevils, even if there's no specific evidence suggesting that was the case in a given wreck. Law enforcement sometimes thinks that way as well, meaning that officers sometimes decide almost immediately that a rider is to blame. Clearly that kind of hair-trigger response can be a problem for innocent riders and their loved ones in the aftermath of these wrecks.

I'm not saying police will mess up the investigation or that motorcyclists can't make mistakes. All I'm saying is that folks can sometimes fall victim to misunderstandings, which can make them overlook or shrug off important details. In reality these incidents can be quite complex, and finding the whole truth usually goes better if experienced and unbiased independent investigators are the ones doing the looking. Will those steps be taken here to find the full story?
