Commentary on Gerald Gunn Jr. Motorcycle Accident off I-35

It's not clear how or why this crash happened yet, and I hope those blanks will be filled quickly by careful investigation. Part of my concern about that comes from the victim being on a motorcycle; I've handled many such accidents over the years and I've learned that riders often get short-changed by the public and even by investigators.

Whether people realize it or not many folks have some serious biases against motorcyclists--biases that make them see most riders as reckless daredevils, even if there's no specific evidence of that in a given wreck. Law enforcement sometimes thinks that way as well, meaning that officers may quickly decide that a rider is to blame for their accident. Clearly that kind of knee-jerk response can be a problem for innocent victims in the aftermath of these wrecks.

I'm not saying police in Austin have it in for motorcyclists, or that riders can't make mistakes. All I'm saying is that folks can sometimes overlook or shrug off important details due to making their minds up too soon. Finding the whole truth usually goes better if experienced and unbiased independent investigators are the ones doing the looking. Will those steps be taken here to find the full story?
