Commentary on Dallas Car Accident on Polk Street

After a crash like this people tend to focus a lot on what happened and what comes next without spending much time on what came before. For instance, investigators seem to think the victim ran a red light in Dallas but even if they're right that doesn't explain why. Why did the victim run the light? Was it solid red when she approached, or changing from yellow? Was she awake, alert, and paying attention to her surroundings? If not, why not? How fast were both vehicles traveling before the crash? What were road conditions like? Visibility and sightlines? Were both vehicles in good repair?

The point of those questions isn't to make the matter more complicated or point fingers. I'm saying that the collision, like many others, could be far more complicated than it seems on its surface. While it's possible that things really boil down to someone's unfortunate choice to try and blow through an intersection, can anyone truly say that was the only factor when so many questions are still unanswered? I don't think so.

The victim deserves the benefit of the doubt and the knowledge that the crash which hurt her so badly will get the careful and thorough investigation it deserves. Any steps beyond ensuring the whole truth is found would depend largely on what that truth is.
