Commentary on Single-Vehicle Accident on US 290 in Hays County

Police often bring up alcohol after early morning wrecks simply because it's a common factor. If it did happen here, it's of course serious to look into. Part of the reason for that, though, is that there could be a local bar liable for their role in this crash. dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Just after 2:00 a.m., that possibility is simply too common to ignore, especially since it can be a significant source of help for victims and families.

With that said, there have been plenty of times where that speculation turned out not to be true. That's another reason to ensure there are thorough investigations into what all happened here. This maybe was just a tragic accident, perhaps it was a complex issue like dram shop, or maybe something highly unusual made the crash worse than it needed to be, such as a defective seatbelt or airbag. At the end of the day, any step to ensure people have appropriate opportunities to get the help they need is important.
