Commentary on Ruben Bonilla Car Accident in Nacogdoches

I find that not many people understand why a car crash like this can be so challenging to investigate. It isn't necessarily that the cause is likely to be complex--it's usually something simple like distracted driving or drunk driving. Rather, it's complex because a proper investigation must anticipate the possibility, however likely, of more complex factors.

Was there some kind of mechanical defect? Did safety features fail? Was there a medical event? Did any other vehicles contribute to the crash? Was the driver illegally over-served by a bar that needs to be held liable? Is this a dangerous area that the city needs to fix? Even if looking into all of this just rules things out, that is an important part of making sure people get the help they deserve. Whether or not that's happening here remains to be seen.
