Amanda Jones Injured in Tesla Crash on Arapaho Rd in Richardson, TX

Richardson, TX — July 2, 2022, 34-year-old passenger Amanda Jones was injured in an auto accident on West Arapaho Road in Richardson.

According to reports the incident happened around 11:35 p.m. on Arapaho near Waterview Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests Jones was riding in a Tesla SUV headed east on the roadway. As the Tesla approached the Waterview the driver braked hard in response to a red light, making the vehicle skid back and forth then hit a traffic light pole and a nearby stone wall.

The vehicle's passenger suffered serious injuries in the crash. The driver, unhurt, reportedly refused to speak to investigators. Police think the driver may have been intoxicated and collected blood samples for testing.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Amanda Jones Accident in Richardson

If blood tests confirm the Tesla driver was intoxicated as police believe, he may face some legal consequences for the damage done to his passenger. That's not really for me to remark upon, though, as it's between him and the state.

Instead I think it's best to talk about ways to help the victim get back on her feet. For instance, if intoxication played a significant part in what happened then it's important she know about Texas dram shop law and how it might help her.

Dram shop law basically says that an alcohol provider who sells or serves more drinks to an obviously intoxicated person may be liable for injuries that person causes while under the influence. That means bars, restaurants, liquor stores, and other establishments can be held legally accountable when they fail to cut drunk customers off and those customers hurt someone.

Whether or not a bar broke the law seems like an important thing to find out during a DWI investigation, but unfortunately police rarely do. It's often better to have independent investigators look into it rather than waiting for authorities. No matter who does the looking, though, the sooner someone investigates what led to the crash the sooner there can be some useful answers. If those answers reveal a way to help the victim recover, that's all the better.
