Commentary on Jesus Prospero-Vazquez Single-Vehicle Accident near Socorro

Just to be clear, I don't know anything more about this crash than what the news says. But whenever a crash report comes across my desk involving someone apparently not wearing their seatbelt, I want to find out why police are saying that.

Quite frankly, they say almost every person thrown from their vehicle wasn't wearing their seatbelt. Statistically, though, a large portion of drivers wear their seatbelts. No doubt many thrown from their vehicles weren't properly secured, but it's not nearly as often as police seem to report.

Some of these can be explained by faulty safety equipment, such as seatbelts breaking, failing to lock, coming undone at the buckle, the seat failing to stay secure, etc. This isn't the sort of thing authorities tend to look into, so getting the full story here may require more thorough independent investigations.
