Commentary on Edwin Chicas Truck Accident in Vancouver
The exact circumstances surrounding this crash aren't entirely clear, but it certainly stands out when a commercial truck crashes with a passenger vehicle, and the truck driver comes out the worse. Maybe the circumstances and severity of the truck overturning would explain this, but I find that there are often crucial details authorities simply fail to investigate properly.
Anytime there's a fatal truck rollover, it's important to find out whether or not that crash should have been survivable. Put simply, there are crashes so serious that any reasonable steps to install safety features likely wouldn't help. There are many other situations, though, where a truck overturns, and the cab simply crushes under the weight because the cabin is little more than a chair surrounded by sheet metal.
It's a well-known issue in the trucking industry that companies continue to neglect making cabins safer for truckers despite the technology existing and the fixes being relatively affordable. So while there obviously needs to be an investigation into the factors that caused the crash itself, there's no doubt a family out there that deserves to know whether it was the crash or factors beyond any of the drivers' control that ultimately took this man's life.
