Commentary on Sergio Valencia-Manzo Accident in Copperas Cove

There's still a lot of missing information here, but I've notice some folks tend to write off most pedestrian accidents without much scrutiny (I've heard "Either they were in a crosswalk or they were at fault" more times than I care to count). However, virtually every accident--including those with pedestrians--deserves careful attention. There are still too many lingering questions right now.

For instance: How long was the victim in the road before the car arrived? Why was he on foot there in the first place? Where did he come from and where was he headed? Are there any pedestrian protections (crosswalk, lights) in that area? This happened just before noon, so what was visibility like? Was the driver awake, alert, and paying full attention to the road? Did other drivers successfully avoid the pedestrian?

I'm not asking all these questions to argue with police findings or to make any accusations. I'm only saying what I so often do: Preliminary reports don't always have a complete or accurate picture, and it's important not to treat them as the final word. It's always best to carefully investigate carefully and thoroughly in search of as many answers as possible. The victim's loved ones deserve no less.
