Joshua Reyes Killed in Hit-and-Run on Beltline Rd in Irving, TX

Irving, TX — June 25, 2022, 19-year-old Joshua Reyes was killed in a hit-and-run accident on North Beltline Road in Irving.

According to reports the incident happened in the early morning near the intersection of North Beltline and Conflans roads. Preliminary investigation suggests Reyes was a passenger in his own car traveling along Beltline when the vehicle was hit from behind by a speeding Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 29-year-old Daniel Cabrera. The impact sent Reyes' vehicle spinning off the road and into a tree.

Reyes suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Investigators say Cabrera and possibly other occupants in the Lancer fled the scene on foot. Police reported there was a nearby illegal street-racing gathering and Cabrera may have been fleeing from authorities breaking up that event.

The investigation continues. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Joshua Reyes Accident in Irving

Clearly this is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes to the family of that young man, and my voice joins theirs in calling for the hit-and-run driver either to turn himself in or be apprehended if he won't do the right thing.

Finding the suspect and taking him into custody is the top priority, but once he's there it's important that police learn everything they can about what happened in that accident. Did the suspect flee the racing event as police believe? If so, why? Was it a simple desire to avoid arrest, or was his decision-making compromised by something? Did he drink at the gathering? If so, who provided the alcohol?

That's only a handful of the many questions that must be answered while authorities look more closely at this event and its implications. Folks might limit their concerns to just the driver who hit the victims and ran, and it's crucial that young man (if he's the right suspect) faces justice. However, if anyone else arguably played a role in the loss of that young man's life then they too should be held accountable. That's why police must remain diligent and hopefully the community will provide any insights they can about where the suspect can be found. Once he's in custody hopefully more of the truth can be found and any further steps identified.
