Commentary on Brianna Nicole Trevino 18-wheeler Accident in Hutchins

The reports suggest that the 18-wheeler may have changed lanes into the victim's car. That's unfortunately common despite how simple it should be to avoid. And that's not me sitting around criticizing truckers who have very difficult jobs. Responsible truck drivers will be the first to tell you the importance of being aware of what's around the truck. Some drivers, however, don't have much experience, aren't properly trained, get distracted by cell phones or perhaps overbearing employers, or maybe they're just impatient.

But as open-and-shut as that seems, there are always barriers to anticipate which require more thorough investigations. Speed of the vehicles, cell phone records, maintenance history, hours of service logs, cargo weight, driver history, road conditions, safety features--these are all things a prudent investigation must consider, and authorities rarely have the tools, time, or training to do so. That's why ensuring there are independent investigations can make a world of difference for those who need help after a truck wreck.
