Commentary on George Albert Munoz Truck Accident in La Grange

Something that stood out to me in reports is police suggesting the victim may have been speeding because a witness reported the motorcyclist passing him. Maybe that's true--I certainly can't say one way or the other. But something that I'm always mindful of is the bias against motorcyclists and how it can severely impact initial investigations without an unbiased eye.

A while back, for example, a family came to me with similar reports, but they knew their loved one was a safe driver. When we went to speak with the witness, his jaw dropped. The reports completely misinterpreted his statements. All he told police was that the motorcyclist passed him, but the investigating officer took that to mean the motorcyclists was recklessly speeding. The witness's revised statement and forensic evidence from our investigations were pivotal in setting the record straight.

Maybe nothing like that happened here, but it's important to always anticipate these potential challenges. Especially with something as serious as a truck driver potentially cutting off traffic making a negligent turn, it's important to ensure no blame goes where it doesn't belong.
