Minor, Driver Injured in Truck Accident on Highway 20 in Sweet Home, OR

Sweet Home, OR -- July 15, 2022, a minor and a truck driver were injured after an accident where their truck crashed off-road.

Authorities were called to the scene at around 6:00 p.m. They say it happened along Highway 20 near the Santiam River. It appears a semi-truck was traveling along the highway when it somehow went off road and crashed down an embankment.

Due to the crash, a minor riding in the truck reportedly had serious injuries. The driver's injuries were said to be non-life-threatening.

While police say they're looking into impairment as a possible factor, the cause of the crash remains unconfirmed.

The possible allegations surrounding this crash may be serious, but it's not wise to comment on that kind of thing without knowing all the facts. Instead, something else stood out to me worth exploring which others might simply overlooking. The driver here seemed to be more or less okay while the minor in the vehicle was significantly hurt. Why is that?

It could be as simple as bad luck or not using a seatbelt, but this can also be a sign a safety feature of some kind didn't work properly. Did a seatbelt fail? Did the truck crumple too easily? There are many shortcomings from manufacturers when it comes to commercial truck safety. It's not the sort of thing authorities tend to consider, so there may need to be more thorough investigations here to find out how much of this was the result of a negligent driver and how much of it would have occurred anyway due to poor manufacturing.
