Commentary on Alleged Intoxicated Driver Accident on Sul Ross in San Angelo

These are obviously serious allegations, and they may seem pretty straight forward. Someone will have their day in court, so surely the victims will get the help they deserve. Well, the law is more complex than that. Someone facing criminal charges is important after an intoxicated driving accident, but it doesn't do much to directly help the victims involved. That's why it's important to understand other tools available to folks to get that help.

One such potential tool is dram shop law. Essentially, if alcohol contributes to a crash, it's important to find out where that alcohol came from. Dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. That could be a bar, liquor store, restaurant, or even a gas station.

I can't say anything like that happened here without more thorough investigations, but I've had hundreds of people come to me with alcohol-related crashes. There are some red flags you just don't ignore, even if it's only to rule them out. Hopefully steps are being taken here not only to ensure there are appropriate consequences for what led to the crash but also to see those involved get whatever help they can.
