Commentary on Mustang Ridge Car Accident

I understand that sometimes authorities have to play things close to the vest until they know more, but even with that in mind there's shockingly little information available in early reports about this crash. How many vehicles were there? How many people? How many were hurt? Did police really not provide even the broadest information here?

I don't mean to come down on law enforcement. It's good policy not to release details until they're verified, and I don't expect them to have all the dots connected so soon after the accident. Still, refusing to provide even a rough sketch as they do for most preliminary news reports may mean they don't even know what they're looking at.

That may sound harsh, but I really just mean there may be unusual or hard-to-explain factors involved that a rank-and-file traffic officer can't make heads or tails of at the scene. If that's the case, should independent investigators with better equipment and training get in there to figure it out?
