Two Killed, Children Injured in Truck Accident on Battlefield Parkway in Catoosa County, GA

Catoosa County, GA -- July 15, 2022, two people were killed and three were injured due to an accident where a truck reportedly ran a light.

Investigators were called to the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Three Notch Road at around 3:00 p.m.

According to officials, 47-year-old Joseph Chislom was the driver of a semi-truck when the truck allegedly went through a red light, crashing into a minivan.

Due to the crash, two adults in the van were killed. Three children were taken to an area hospital. Reports say that authorities arrested Chislom for homicide by vehicle, driving too fast for conditions, and failure to obey a traffic signal.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Fatal Truck Accident on Battlefield Parkway in Catoosa County

If these allegations prove to be true, then this is just shocking. That's not to say this is surprising. This sort of thing is tragically common. For that reason, though, people can sometimes assume steps will be taken to properly address what led to this awful crash. Maybe authorities here are particularly skilled and equipped, but I've seen time and time again how getting the full story can take far more thorough independent investigations. After all, mistakes aren't always in a vacuum. Oftentimes, they're the symptom of a more serious issue.

One thing to consider, for example, is just how foreseeable something like this was. In some cases, investigations into a driver's history and training can reveal red flags their employer either wasn't vigilant enough to catch or simply ignored.

Catoosa County, GA Truck Accident Kills 2, Injures 3 on Battlefield Parkway

A recent crash I looked into, for example, involved a truck driver that could barely drive their truck because they had little to no training. Records showed that his employer was essentially desperate to put warm bodies behind the wheel, skipped over vital safety training, and got the driver on the road as soon as they could. Any trucker in their right mind would attest to the skill and care it takes to safely operate their vehicles. Putting someone behind the wheel without the right skills and competency might as well be loading a gun and handing it to a toddler. Someone is going to get hurt.

Just to reiterate, I can't say if anything like that happened here. My point is that there are people out there whose lives have been torn apart. If someone's reckless actions led to that hardship, then ensuring there are consequences is crucial. Letting one person take all the blame when there could be others hoping they dodge that bullet wouldn't be right. Thorough investigations can help to ensure both that folks get whatever help is available to them and that those who harmed them answer for their actions. Are those steps being taken here?
