Five Injured in Four-Vehicle Accident on I-94 near Moorhead, MN

Moorhead, MN — July 14, 2022, several people were injured in a four-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on Interstate 94 near Moorhead.

According to reports the incident happened around 10:00 a.m. on westbound I-94, east of town. Preliminary investigation didn't provide many details about the accident, saying only that involved a GMC Yukon, a Ford Explorer, a car, and a semi-truck that collided in the roadway.

Three people in the Yukon and two people in the Explorer, identified as 64-year-old Rosemary Johnson and 78-year-old Patricia Crowell, were reportedly injured. All were taken to area hospitals for treatment. The drivers of the car and the semi-truck were unhurt.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Four-Vehicle Accident on I-94 near Moorhead

There isn't a lot of clear information yet about how exactly this crash happened or what caused it. Since so many details are still missing, I hope no one tries to fill in the blanks with speculation.

Because only clear facts should tell the story, police still need to look into many of its potential factors: Possible mistakes by the drivers like distraction or speeding, problems or defects in the vehicles, road conditions and design, visibility, lighting and sightlines, inclement weather, other traffic in the area, and many other elements that could have influenced or even caused the crash.

Considering all the variables is an important part of any investigation, which means as more dots are connected it's best not to assume what picture they'll make. I've seen too many folks rush to judgment after reading a few sentences in the news only to completely change their minds after more information came to light. The same could easily happen here, though a "by the book" police investigation may not fully explain things either.

After a major accident--particularly one involving a commercial truck--I generally suggest an independent investigation to better ensure the whole truth is found. Whatever is learned, those affected deserve to know that every effort was made to bring them all the available answers. Any other actions beyond simply learning the truth would depend on what that turns out to be.
