While the exact details here aren't all that clear, there are very few reasons a truck crosses the center line without the driver messing up big time. Could it be there was some highly unusual factor like a mechanical defect? Sure. Could this have been an unpredictable tragedy relating to something like a tire blowout? Certainly. Those are all factors worth considering. But even if it's clear the truck driver did something wrong, getting justice for a grieving family can still require thorough independent investigations.

Let me explain why that is. Even if a driver does something wrong, that doesn't always mean they're the only ones who need to be held accountable. With commercial trucks, there's also a concern with factors leading up to the crash that a driver may have little to no control over.

A while back, for example, I handled a situation in which a truck driver crashed while texting his boss. As obviously reckless as that was, we were curious if that boss understood that an employee was responding to him when the crash happened. As it turned out, this was a huge problem at this company.

That supervisor would constantly call and text drivers throughout the day, and if they didn't respond immediately, they risked losing their jobs. So while that driver's actions were reckless, they were likely done out of fear of upsetting his unreasonable boss.

Time and time again, folks come to me with what they think is an open-and-shut case only for more thorough investigations to show there are serious problems that need to be addressed. Getting those folks the help they need is always a priority, but those same people will attest to how important it is to see those responsible for something this devastating held fully accountable for their actions. Are those steps being taken here?
