Commentary on Alicia Castaneda Accident in Gainesville
When folks see a rear-end collision I've noticed many will automatically assume the rear driver did something wrong. Maybe that's true here as well, as police seem to think the victim didn't control her speed. Instead of taking that as the final word on the matter, though, it's important to take another look in case anything was missed. What else could have contributed to the crash?
Here are some unanswered questions that come to mind: How fast was the victim actually traveling as she approached the truck? What about the big rig--was it traveling normally, speeding, or moving slowly? Did the truck driver brake for some reason? Were both vehicles in good repair? Was the victim paying attention to her surroundings? If not, why not? Could any external factors like road conditions or bad weather have played a part?
I'm not trying to overcomplicate things. The most likely explanation is that the victim made an unfortunate mistake. However, that doesn't mean anyone should just write the crash off without seeking more information. The victim deserves to know that every effort was made to find the whole truth--including the less-obvious details that get overlooked in a "by the book" investigation. Will authorities make that effort here?
