Commentary on Girl Killed at Oceans of Fun Water Park in Kansas City

While folks may be quick to assume this is a drowning-related incident, the reality is these reports do little to shed light on what happened. Drowning would be the most likely explanation, but over the years, I've see all kinds of things lead to terrible incidents like this.

There may have been exposed wiring due to broken light fixtures. There have been incidents related to poorly balanced pool chemicals. Someone else in the pool may have done something reckless. This could all be due to poor oversight by lifeguards or even a lack of sufficient lifeguards on duty. Instead of jumping to conclusions, it's best to ensure there are thorough independent investigations to ensure the victim's loved ones get the answers they deserve. That's true with just about any kind of incident, but the death of a child is simply too serious not to make every effort to find the truth.
