Commentary on Car Accident on NW Highway in Dallas
After single-vehicle wrecks I try to remind folks not to jump to any conclusions. There's an unfortunate tendency to assume the driver in a wreck like the one in Dallas is to blame without giving them the benefit of the doubt or waiting for more information.
Is it possible the driver made a mistake? Of course. Things like distraction, speeding, and impairment are so common that they should always be looked into. Alcohol's a particularly important factor to consider because if the driver was served beyond his limits then the place that did so might be liable for his fatal injuries under Texas dram shop law.

However, just because the above issues are common doesn't mean they can or should be taken for granted. Less-likely possibilities like mechanical defects, road hazards, medical emergencies, and even other involved vehicles that left the scene should also be evaluated to make sure the truth is found.
If nothing else, taking steps to ensure the crash is properly understood is crucial for everyone affected by it. If there are any steps beyond getting the victim's loved ones the truth, that will depend on what the truth turns out to be.
