Marcus Morgan Dead, Three Injured in Jasper County, TX Boat Accident

Jasper County, TX — July 7, 2022, 47-year-old Marcus Morgan died and three others were injured after two boats crashed on the Sam Rayburn Reservoir.

According to reports the incident happened around 6:00 p.m. in the open waters of the reservoir, roughly halfway between the south dam and Ebenezer Park. Preliminary investigation suggests a bass boat and pontoon boat were headed toward one another in the water. Both operators took evasive maneuvers but mirrored one another, caused the boats to crash. The bass boat broadsided the pontoon boat and went airborne, ejecting its operator into the water.

Morgan, the pontoon boat's driver, was severely injured in the collision. He was airlifted to an area hospital where he died a short time later. Three other people aboard the pontoon boat and a child on the bass boat received unspecified injuries.

Game wardens investigated the crash and interviewed the bass boat driver, 39-year-old Eric Cozart. Reports say they detected no signs of intoxication or impairment.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Marcus Morgan Boat Accident in Jasper County

Investigators are still working hard to figure out exactly how this tragic incident took place. It's cold comfort at best to read that intoxication doesn't seem to be a factor; goodness knows many summer-fun boating trips end in tragedy because of that.

However, knowing what wasn't a factor isn't nearly as useful as finding out what was. The simplest explanation might be a failure to pay attention until the boats were almost on top of one another, but it's important for investigators to consider any and all other possible factors as well. If choppy waters redirected the bass boat or its throttle was somehow stuck, tragic though the crash would still be it wouldn't be fair to blame it on the bass boat operator.

I'm not trying to point fingers or say I know something police don't. My point is just that most crashes need careful and thorough investigation to be sure all their facts are known--both to ensure everyone's on the same page about what happened and to ensure the right parties are held accountable. Will law enforcement take the time and care needed to learn the whole story here?
