Commentary on Portia Dickens Hit-and-Run in Dallas
It's always sad and frustrating to learn of another Texas hit-and-run. It boggles the mind that anyone is capable of leaving someone dying in the street after causing them harm. The circumstances of each accident may vary some, but the anger and questions they create are largely the same.
One of the biggest questions lingering in the wake of a hit-and-run is simple "Why?" Why did the crash happen, and why did the driver leave the scene? Many other questions follow: Were they just scared? Did they panic? Or was it a conscious effort to avoid responsibility? Is it possible they had something to hide, like warrants or an expired license? Were they drunk and not thinking clearly?
One, several, or none of those could be involved here, but before motives and details can be established the runaway driver has to be located. Hopefully someone will recognize the hit-and-run vehicle from its description and photos captured by local surveillance cameras, then contact police. If authorities release any new details and developments and the public is vigilant and cooperative, I'm confident this can be properly resolved. Any steps beyond simply bringing the driver to justice would depend on what investigators learn.
