Caldwell County, TX — June 18, 2022, 49-year-old Julio Serrano was seriously injured in a traffic accident on State Highway 21 in Caldwell County.

According to reports the incident happened around 3:20 a.mm. on TX-21 near Skyline Road. Preliminary investigation suggests Serrano was driving a Honda Odyssey west on the highway when he allegedly drifted left of center into the oncoming lane. Ahead, the driver of an eastbound Ford F-150 saw the van approaching steered toward the shoulder to try and avoid it. The two vehicles collided on the shoulder, pushing the pickup into a nearby guardrail.

Serrano suffered critical injuries in the crash and was airlifted to an area hospital. The pickup driver was taken by private vehicle to another hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Commentary on Julio Serrano Accident in Caldwell County

Reports say the badly-injured victim in this crash may have triggered it by crossing over the center line. It's not clear why that might have happened, and when the report was issued police hadn't been able to interview him because he was put in a medically-induced coma due to the gravity of his injuries.

Until they have a chance to learn more of the story either through interviewing the victim or finding forensic evidence, I must strongly discourage jumping to any conclusions. People have an unfortunate habit of seeing that someone traveled left of center and blaming them more or less automatically, citing common bad driving behavior like looking at a phone or even being intoxicated.

While it's true that operator error accounts for a lot of these wrecks, it's important to look into other possibilities as well. For all anyone knows right now the van could have had a mechanical failure or defect, or even lost traction on a wet or hazardous patch of road. I'm not saying I know something like that was involved, but it's important to consider and investigate even less-common possibilities like those.

At the very least, the victim's loved ones deserve every answer than can be found through careful and thorough investigation. Will police invest the time and effort needed to get those answers?
