The driver had incapacitating injuries due to the crash. Police said they believe that alcohol was a factor, but this cannot be confirmed at this time.

Commentary on Single-Vehicle Accident on School House Road in Wise County

When reading reports like this, it's important to keep in mind these two very distinct possibilities. One is that alcohol was indeed a factor here, in which case it's important to look into whether or not a local establishment illegally over-served the victim, since they could be liable for their role in the crash. Second is the possibility alcohol simply wasn't a factor here. But why would authorities bring it up in the reports if it wasn't a factor?

Put simply, alcohol is a common factor, so it often makes it into reports even if it's only being considered as standard procedure. Authorities can jump to conclusions, put details in the wrong boxes on the reports, or word their fact patterns poorly. If further investigations showed something the driver had no control over led to the crash, it wouldn't be the first time.

That's why it's best not to jump to conclusions, important as a possibility like alcohol can be. Letting the evidence speak for itself is crucial when getting folks the help they need. I see no reason to jump to conclusions here when there may still be room for more thorough investigations.
