Michael Valdez Killed in Rollover Accident on TX-163 in Val Verde County

Val Verde County, TX — June 8, 2022, 32-year-old Michael Valdez was killed in a single-vehicle accident on State Highway 163 in Val Verde County.

According to reports the incident happened around 3:45 p.m. on TX-163 near mile marker 580. Preliminary investigation suggests Valdez was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck south on the highway when he lost control in a curve.

The pickup crashed into a guardrail, then crossed through the northbound roadway and left the road. It hit a berm and overturned, rolling onto a nearby property and coming to rest.

Valdez was ejected in the rollover and suffered fatal injuries. Investigators say he may have been drinking alcohol after finding two open containers in the pickup.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Michael Valdez Accident in Val Verde County

It's obviously concerning any time authorities bring up alcohol as a possible factor after a wreck. However, it's important to keep in mind that they often note suspicions on reports just for evidence to show that something else entirely was responsible for a crash. That's why the box where they list possible contributing factors notes they're the "investigator's opinion."

It sounds like there was some circumstantial evidence found at the scene that led to police mentioning alcohol. If further investigation proves them right, that may mean a local business illegally over-served the driver and violated dram shop law. If so, that business may have a responsibility to make whatever amends it could to the victim's family.

I can't say whether alcohol contributed to this crash, but it's an important possibility to investigate. So are mechanical issues in the pickup, medical emergencies, hazardous or poorly-designed roads, tire defects, or even other vehicles that fled the scene. The moments following a crash can be chaotic, and investigators sometimes focus so much on a few details that they neglect others. If an accident like this isn't followed up on by experienced independent investigators, the victim's loved ones may not get the answers they deserve.
