Commentary on Lorenzo Posadas Accident in Georgetown

Police mentioned in their report that the victim may have been drinking alcohol before the wreck. It's unclear whether they found evidence of that or just guessed based on how the crash happened, but unless they obtain proof I hope impairment is just one of many possible explanations they consider.

For all anyone knows at this point the crash could have happened because the victim was distracted by something, because his brakes quit on him at the worst possible moment, or because the car lost traction on loose debris or water in the road. Some reasons for the wreck would be the driver's fault, while others would mean the accident was out of his control. The law would treat those situations quite differently, which is why it's so important to learn the truth.

As police keep connecting the dots, it's important not to make assumptions about the picture they'll form. The victim deserves the benefit of the doubt (in legal terms, the presumption of innocence) unless clear evidence is found that says otherwise, so anyone not directly investigating the matter should focus instead on how best to help the victim get back on his feet.
