Commentary on Lauren Lawson Accident in McKinney
Police think the victim was intoxicated when she crashed. If blood tests confirm that, some may feel there's not much else to say about it aside from possibly charging her accordingly.
However, there are other aspects of DWI accidents to investigate. For instance, many drunk drivers have "accomplices" of sorts that too often escape responsibility for their part in these crashes. That's why police should also find out where the victim drank before driving.
Texas dram shop law broadens the responsibility for DWI wrecks beyond the drivers to sometimes include the businesses that sold or served them drinks. If further investigations determine a licensed alcohol vendor over-served the driver prior to the accident, it may be expected to make whatever amends it can to the person hurt by its reckless over-service. Not every DWI wreck involves a dram violation, but they're more common than they ideally should be.

Of course, it's also worth noting that the vehicle went off-track in large part due to blowing a tire. That also deserves careful investigation; some may assume it just hit debris in the road and gave way, but it's possible the tire was defective and had no other reason to blow out.
It's important that investigators find out why the tire blew--not just to be sure the accident's whole story is properly told, but also because if it was defective than it's possible thousands of others could blow the same way. In that case the manufacturer needs to be made aware of the problem so it can issue a recall and set things right.
Basically the takeaway here is that few crashes are really as simple or one-dimensional as reports typically make them sound. It's always best to investigate them carefully and thoroughly to be sure the whole truth is found and everyone responsible for the damage is held properly accountable.
