Commentary on Truck Tire Accident on I-66 in Fairfax County
Some folks may look at this as just some unavoidable freak accident, and it's possible that's more or less correct. However, it's also quite possible that a serious mistake led to the crash.
Generally speaking, a tire coming off a truck like this is the result of either poor usage or poor maintenance. If the truck driver or their employer failed to properly secure that wheel onto the vehicle or maintain it once it was there, they may be considered responsible for the damage it did when it got loose.

Unlikely as it may be, it's also important to consider whether there was some unforeseeable manufacturing issue that led to the accident. If there was a problem with some part of the wheel assembly and it fell apart during normal use, then holding the manufacturer accountable for the victim's injuries will also help make them aware they need to do something before more people get hurt.
I'm not saying I know how or why things went the way they did on I-66, but it seems like there are at least two big concerns about the accident. First would probably be locating the truck driver who didn't see fit to stop despite his big rig losing a wheel, and second would be ensuring that the investigators handling this have the experience and equipment to get all the facts.
