Commentary on Craig Ross, Darlena Williams, Chron Taylor Car Accident in Lubbock

There are two particular details in these reports which make me concerned that important information will slip through the cracks without proper independent investigations. Why is that? Well, one is concerning the time of day at which the crash occurred. At 2:00 a.m., alcohol is all too common, and that can result in rather challenging legal situations when it comes to getting people the help they deserve.

Specifically, this is due to dram shop law. In Texas, dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Someone on their way home from a bar who is dangerously intoxicated may get into an accident if they were over-served, which allows the victims and families affected to hold the complicit alcohol provider accountable for their involvement. It's not the kind of thing authorities tend to look into, which is why I try to inform people about dram shop so they can ensure someone looks into in the event they're involved in a serious accident.

Beyond that, however, there's another concerning factor: the fact there's a motorcyclist involved. Folks may not realize just how many people are quick to blame motorcyclists for a crash simply because they believe all motorcyclists are reckless drivers. Now, I obviously can't say what happened here without more thorough investigations. It's entirely possible for motorcyclists to be reckless just like anyone else. But the problem comes when this common negative bias stands between authorities and proper investigations that let the evidence speak for itself.

So while I can't speak to what all led to this crash, there are more than enough red flags that concern me that I see plenty of reason that the details should be in the hands of independent professionals. Perhaps they'll show that nothing unusual happened here, but it's crucial for families in need of help to know they have the answers and the tools to get that help without missing anything important.
