A sudden mechanical defect, for example, can cause drivers to lose control without any warning. They may not be that common, but they've caused serious wrecks before, and they certainly can again. The challenge is that authorities don't always have the experience or tools to consider these less likely possibilities, so getting clear answers may require more thorough independent investigations. Are those steps being taken here?
