Commentary on Jasmine Lorrane Heredia Car Accident in Muniz
Just to be clear up front, I don't have any evidence beyond what's in these initial reports, so authorities could be correct in saying that unsafe speeds contributed to this crash. However, I try to remind people that these early reports don't always tell the whole story. In fact, they're often entirely inaccurate. One thing that is particularly concerning to me is how authorities tend to approach deadly wrecks involving teenagers.

Put simply, there is a strong negative bias against teen drivers due to the reality that they are more likely to cause crashes. But just because that's more likely doesn't mean we can overlook things like mechanical defects, medical conditions, road hazards, other reckless drivers who left the scene, alcohol, missing or defective signage and lighting, tire blowouts, etc. Whether or not something is likely isn't the point. Making sure a grieving family knows they're getting the full story is.
So while I certainly can't say what did or didn't happen here, I'd caution anyone from reading these reports and assuming they know the whole story. It may take far more thorough independent investigations to ensure the victim's loved ones are getting the answers they deserve.
