Commentary on Teen Killed Truck Accident on Liberty Street in Dexter

It's just devastating to read about any accident like this one. Right now, authorities seem to be of the mind that the truck driver didn't do anything wrong. That doesn't necessarily mean investigations are complete, however. It's important a family knows for certain they're getting the full story--especially when losing a child.

For all we know, this is some highly unusual situation resulting from defects at an intersection, including bad lighting, missing signage, worn and faded crosswalks, visibility obstructions, etc. There's also the issue that some folks are quick to blame teenagers and cyclists without a proper investigation. Even the authorities can fall victim to this bias, and I've had plenty of situations where further investigations showed authorities completely overlooked a mistake a driver made. Could the same prove true here?

Obviously, evidence needs to speak for itself. It could be that further investigations only confirm what police already know. That alone is a result worth pursuing. A child lost their life in this awful event. Shouldn't that warrant every possible effort to ensure their loved ones are getting all the facts, whatever story they may tell? Simply waiting around for the police may not be enough to that end, which is why independent investigations may still be necessary here.
