Commentary on Estela Sanchez, Jacob Sanchez Car Accident in Midland

With single-vehicle wrecks like this, folks tend to immediately blame the drivers. That's because, quite frankly, they're usually to blame. Things like distracted driving and alcohol are all too common. But there could be more complex factors authorities didn't consider.

For one, even if a driver does make a mistake, that doesn't mean there are no legal avenues available to them. Drunk driving, for example, can involve local bars if an establishment illegally over-served the driver, making them liable under dram shop law. Alternatively, investigations could show something highly unusual like a mechanical defect led to the crash. That's not usually the sort of thing a driver has within their control.

Likely or not, there are many factors which warrant consideration before people start throwing blame around. If for no other reason than to ensure folks have every opportunity to get the help they need, steps should always be taken to have experienced investigators look into a serious crash so nothing important slips through the cracks. Were those steps taken here?
