Michael Dean Young Injured in Car Accident in Alamo Heights, TX

Alamo Heights, TX -- May 30, 2022, Michael Dean Young was injured due to an accident which possibly involved a drunk driver.

Bexar County officials and other departments responded to the area of Broadway Street and Terrell Road at around 6:23 p.m.

Their initial reports said that 57-year-old Michael Dean Young was in a Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound on Broadway. At Terrell, police say that an eastbound vehicle may have disregarded a light, crashing into Young's vehicle. This forced Young off-road where his vehicle hit the Osaka restaurant. The other driver then allegedly fled the scene.

Young was said to have non-incapacitating injuries due to the crash. While reports indicate authorities identified the vehicle involved in the accident, it's unclear if they identified or apprehended the driver. However, authorities did say they believe alcohol was a factor. This and other details are still under investigation.

Commentary on Michael Dean Young Car Accident in Alamo Heights

If it turns out to be true that a drunk driver was involved here, it tragically wouldn't be too surprising. It's a common reason someone leaves the scene of an accident, and it obviously warrants appropriate consequences. But those consequences may not be as straight-forward as people may think. It isn't always as simple as charging a driver alone. There could also be a local alcohol provider responsible for contributing to the victim's injuries that also needs to take responsibility.

This is due to dram shop law, which essentially says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Bars, restaurants, gas stations, and liquor stores breaking the law for the sake of business without regard for the safety of the public or even their own customers need to clean up their act before more people are hurt due to their selfish actions. Dram shop often serves as this wake-up call while also serving the important role of getting people some much needed help.

To be clear, I can't say if anything like that applies here without more thorough investigations. My hope is that steps were taken to ensure professionals looked into the events here so those involved know what next steps are available to them.
